Are Different Patterns of Communication in Women and Men Innately Determined? In the piece, ‘Are Different Patterns of Communication in Women and Men Innately Determined’, Louann Brizendine, argues yes they are innately determined while, Brenda J. Allen, argues no, women and men are conditioned through social interactions based on power and position. In the creation and maintenance of the gender system, communication and gender are viewed as very important by feminists because language is a very powerful agent. In 1978, a review of Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society† (vol. 3, 1978) by Cheris Kramer, Barrie Thorne, and Nancy Henley was published. This review addressed and sought to summarize the three important research questions: â€Å"1) Do men and women use language in different ways? 2) In what ways does language-in structure, content, and daily usage-reflect and help constitute sexual inequality? 3) How can sexist language be changed?† . In most recent years, the same questions are being asked but more specifically geared towards specificity and complexity regarding women and men in particular settings, identifying interactions, identity categories and power relations.
